A number of readers have asked me if I knew of any
companies or associations that offer one day rail travel trips. I
am not aware of any such tours, but a reader recently submitted information
about just such a company in Canada. Transrail, operating out of Ottawa,
offers one and three day rail tours in eastern Canada, between Ottawa,
Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City.
Transrail travelers ride in private rail cars
attached to VIA Rail trains and receive special food service aboard
these cars. On overnight trips, private sleeping cars are utilized.
The tours include hotel and dining at the destination city, as well
as motor coach hotel transfers and guided tours.
Transrail offers rail adventures, which are one
day, round trip excursions, rail getaways, most of which are three
night trips and rail cruises, which are longer, multi-destination
trips.
A rail cruise might include ten days and nine
nights of travel between Toronto, Niagara Falls, Ottawa, Montreal
and Quebec City, with first class rail travel between those cities,
hotel stays in each city, gracious dining and various city tours.
A rail getaway might include two nights and three days of travel
in Montreal and Quebec City.
However, the most unique offering is the rail
adventure, a one day rail trip. This is unique since it is very
difficult to find one day rail trips, even though there are many
travelers out there who are looking for just that. An example of
a Transrail rail adventure would include leaving the Ottawa train
station at 9:15 am, enjoying a full breakfast onboard, arriving
in Montreal just before noon, boarding a motor coach, with guide,
and enjoying a day of sights and activities in Montreal. The return
train would leave Montreal around 4:30 p.m., later on Saturdays,
and the traveler would arrive back in Ottawa by 6:30 p.m., later
on Saturdays.
Transrail provides a listing of all tours on their
site and they can be contacted at (866) 70TRAIN (toll free in North
America) or info@railwaypatrol.ca.
For the solo traveler, or anyone who enjoys meeting
and traveling with others, these rail adventures are very appealing.
If any readers know of anything of this sort in the U.S., please
let me know, so I can share the information
on the Train Traveler site.
