Question: How are Amtrak trips priced? Is the price I get when I use the Amtrak site a per person price or the total cost of the trip? How are sleepers prices?

Answer: If you choose an itinerary on the Amtrak reservations site, there is a box where you enter the number of travelers. Whatever number of travelers you enter into the box will be the number of travelers included in the final price. So, if you enter two adults and two children into the reservations site, the final price will include those four travelers.

If you choose accommodations that are individual, such as business class or lower level reserved coach, the price of the tickets will rise accordingly and, again, each traveler will be included in the final price. One price is paid for a sleeper, rather than a per person price. However, each person in the sleeper receives all meals. So, if you purchase a Family Sleeper, and four travelers stay in the sleeper, all of them receive all meals while onboard. Although it may appear that sleepers are pricey, you have to remember that three meals a day per person are included.

Remember, children under sixteen get a great deal on Amtrak. The most you would pay for a child is half price, but quite often children's tickets cost even less, and are sometimes free, so ALWAYS check the Savings and Promotions link on the Amtrak site. Other promotions will also be listed here, such as the current Miles of Smiles promotion, giving travelers 30% off of tickets for travel before June 15, 2002.
